It is curious how things are evolving here after almost a week now... On the night of the election everyone who voted for him was celebrating on the streets, entire families in such an hearty way that it looked like Chile had won the World Cup.

In the first days his actions in LAN (I think he doesn't exactly own it, he holds 20% of it through a company called Axxion) rose amazingly. After a week we are talking about a 200% increase on their value and a couple of days ago the stock market stopped trading them fearing speculation. When they restarted the operations it rose 20% on the first 10 minutes and 64% after one hour!! This man, still before taking his mandate, is already 30% richer than before!!

He will change Chile, that's clear. There are people that say that he will actually make an effort to do things right, to assure a second mandate. People do believe that economy will get better and public management will be more efficient. On the other hand, all of my artist friends are positively sure that the investment on their area will be greatly reduced and if their life was already difficult, it will get worse. I guess everyone tries to look after their needs and it is difficult to get unbiased opinions...

I think this is just a way of "joining the useful to the pleasant". You avoid getting those little peso coins that you will never be able to give back to anyone and you feel pseudo-well with yourself because you are supposedly making a donation to those in need. If these little pesos would be eradicated from the society, the donations would stop for sure!

I don't have a problem with giving to "charity" in principle but charity should not be a substitute for a proper welfare system. I won't even go into the charity being a christian one. I think it's just an excuse for people to feel good and feel like they are doing their bit but it's an empty gesture.
